Brooklyn child care centers stave off closure for a year, but uncertainty remains
Briefly

The Nuestros Niños child care center, which has provided services for 50 years, will remain open for an additional year due to public outcry against its closure. Although the center will allow parents to register for the next school year, the city has only granted a month-to-month lease rather than a long-term renewal, raising concerns about future stability. Local officials like Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso support the extensions but caution that the centers are still at risk of future closures depending on the city's lease reviews.
According to Nuestros Niños Executive Director Ingrid Matias Chungata, the extension came with a catch. "They're not looking to renew the lease of the building."
Supporters express concern that the short-term fix will mean repeating the same shutdown scenario next year as the city reviews its expiring leases.
Directors of other centers confirmed they will be available for families to enroll in, but the uncertainty remains regarding their long-term futures.
Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso acknowledged, "these centers are not yet saved" despite the temporary extensions granted.
