The study revealed that had there been no rapid eradication efforts, over 1,500km2 of the UK would have been colonised by the yellow-legged hornet by 2020.
The successful response in the UK contrasts with the situation in France and Italy where the invasive species has severely impacted honeybee populations and spread rapidly.
Dr. Richard Hassall emphasized that ongoing public vigilance and quick action by authorities have been critical in preventing the establishment of the yellow-legged hornet in the UK.
Despite regular sightings of the Asian hornet in the UK, effective eradication has so far maintained a significant barrier against its colonization, unlike in neighboring European countries.
