The DA's office alleges that Vines, while incarcerated, claimed his wife was a criminal attorney who could reduce a fellow inmate's sentence for payment.
"Vines and O'Leary worked together to defraud the victim through a series of phone calls, forged legal documents and continued assurances that funds paid to O'Leary were in return for rendered legal services," the DA's office said.
The inmate's family, after paying over $10,000 under false pretenses, alerted authorities when they became suspicious in August 2023.
Prosecutors stated that Vines and O'Leary have been indicted on multiple charges, including larceny and conspiracy, and await arraignment in Brockton Superior Court.
