Brazilian PhD students opt out of US research opportunities
Briefly

Many Brazilian graduate students are abandoning or delaying their plans to study in the United States due to concerns over immigration policies and the current political environment under President Trump. According to CAPES, 96 PhD students have shifted their study destinations to countries like the UK and Germany, a noticeable increase compared to the previous year when no students changed their plans. Nearly 100 students have opted out of their U.S. placements, leading to alarm among educational officials about the implications for scientific research and academic exchanges.
A quiet shift has taken place among Brazilian graduate-student researchers over the past year: many are giving up or postponing plans to work in the United States, despite having secured grants or academic partnerships there.
Concerns over immigration policies and the politicization of science under US President Donald Trump are pushing young scientists to seek opportunities elsewhere, they say.
According to the Brazilian Federal Agency for the Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (CAPES), at least 96 PhD students who had been selected to go to the United States this year have changed their destination to other countries.
CAPES president Denise Pires de Carvalho stated, 'They're hearing that some people are being denied entry even with valid visas.'
