Brain injury rehab unit planned near Upminster secondary school
Briefly

Havering Council has received a planning application for a 40-bedroom acquired brain injury unit (ABIU) in Upminster, designed by Ceres Property for Enable Care. The facility aims to provide specialized rehabilitation in a residential environment, featuring expert staff, a wellness garden, and an ecology pond. The design consists of three blocks arranged around a central courtyard. This initiative addresses a significant shortage of ABIUs, which often forces residents to be placed far from their homes, frequently in inappropriate nursing facilities. Previous plans for similar units at this site have faced rejection since 2017.
The planning documents assert a growing need for ABIUs, noting residents are often placed far from home due to an acute shortage, leading to unsuitable living conditions.
This development aims to provide a supportive rehabilitation environment for younger individuals, reducing the reliance on inadequately suited nursing homes for brain injuries.
The facility, designed with three blocks around a courtyard, features a wellness garden and an ecology pond, all aimed at enhancing the rehabilitation experience.
Despite previous rejections for similar developments on this site, Enable Care believes this application addresses a critical need for local brain injury rehabilitation facilities.
