Blakes nets NCAA freshman-record 55 in Vandy win
Briefly

Mikayla Blakes made history by scoring 55 points in an overtime win for Vanderbilt against Auburn, surpassing the previous Division I women's freshman record held by Elena Delle Donne. Blakes showcased her scoring ability, hitting 15-of-28 shots and converting 23-of-24 from the free-throw line. She demonstrated resilience and leadership, scoring crucial points late in the game and sending it to overtime with three successful free throws just before regulation ended. Blakes’ mindset shift toward confidence and maturity was pivotal in her performance, which adds to her recent success in the season.
I'm just excited. I had to prove myself, and just do whatever needed to be done for us to win today. So, I just wanted to really dig deep and just show my effort and energy.
I had a mindset change to be more confident in myself. When things are being denied for me, and I'm being pressured, just to be able to handle that better, and be more mature. So, I think I tried to do that today.
I knew coming in here today that we were going to win today. We had to; and that was the mindset that my team showed up with, and Mikayla showed up.
I do want to say, while it was another amazing effort by her, that she wouldn't have been able to do it without a lot of kids stepping up.
