Puerto Rico’s power grid collapsed on New Year's Eve, leaving 1.3 million people without power, and it may take up to 48 hours to restore.
Luma Energy attributed the outage to a failure in an underground line, noting that only 13.5% of customers had power shortly after the incident.
Since Hurricane Maria in 2017, blackouts have been a widespread issue in Puerto Rico, leading many residents to rely on backup generators.
The incoming governor, Jenniffer Gonzalez-Colon, plans to appoint an energy czar to reassess contracts with Luma and explore alternatives for power management.
