Dajiah Blackshear-Calloway's salon in Smyrna, Georgia, has seen a decline in client visits due to increased costs from tariffs on beauty products sourced from China and Vietnam. Popular services like sew-ins and quick weaves are affected by rising prices for hair extensions and glues. Despite hopes for increased home hairstyling, salons are experiencing reduced foot traffic and customer frequency. Many beauty supply owners, particularly Black business owners, face challenges with rising prices impacting their sales and services, contrary to the historical resilience of beauty product sales during economic downturns.
The prices of hair extensions and hair glues used to create wigs and weaves have gone up exponentially after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on China and Vietnam, where the majority of Black beauty products are made.
Tariffs are disproportionately impacting Black business owners like Blackshear-Calloway and Dosso, as 50 percent of the merchandise comes from China, leading to rising prices for beauty supply products.
