Leonard Farruku, 27, was found unresponsive in a shower cubicle aboard the Bibby Stockholm at Portland Port, Dorset, on 12 December 2023. Family report he struggled emotionally after the deaths of both parents in 2013 and 2018 and became withdrawn during a period in Italy. He saw a psychologist on return to Albania but did not continue sessions. After arriving in the UK he initially lived with cousins, then moved into Home Office hotel accommodation where he reported issues with staff and poor conditions and increasingly stopped responding to calls and messages from August 2023. The family say they were unaware he had been moved to the barge and question why someone with apparent mental-health needs was housed there.
