The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) temporarily closed a food establishment after discovering unsanitary practices involving the dual use of a vacuum packing machine for both raw and ready-to-eat foods. This posed a contamination risk, leading to a stop order that lasted nine days. Additionally, various enforcement actions were taken against several food businesses for hygiene violations, notably involving a cockroach infestation at Ella's Heaven Café and Bakery, and rodent activity at Lismore Golf Club, highlighting broader food safety concerns in Ireland.
The dual use of a vacuum packing machine for both raw and ready-to-eat foods presents a significant risk of ready-to-eat foods becoming contaminated with bacteria.
There is an active cockroach infestation within the premises. All stages of the lifecycle from nymph to adult was found in the food premises during the inspection.
Live cockroaches were noted in the kitchen directly above open ready to food and spices. Dead cockroaches and live cockroaches were noted in traps throughout the premises.
The inspectors noted there was no bait on the trap and it was surrounded by droppings, concluding there was active vermin present.
