Barbara Hepworth's string sculptures exhibited in public for first time
Briefly

Barbara Hepworth's iconic Winged Figure has graced London's Oxford Street for over 60 years, but many of her string sculptures remained hidden until now. A new exhibition at Piano Nobile gallery will showcase these lesser-known works, marking a significant moment in celebrating Hepworth's artistic legacy. Letters reveal her challenges in ensuring her pieces' proper functioning, particularly with Mullard's Theme on Electronics (Orpheus), highlighting her ongoing concern for her art post-creation. This exhibition not only honors her contributions but also provides insight into her dedication as an artist.
"Barbara always took great interest in her works after they left her studio in St Ives," says Dr Sophie Bowness, granddaughter of Hepworth and a leading expert on Britain's greatest female sculptor.
"I have often been very dismayed to find that either the work was not moving around, or, if it did, it jerked," Hepworth expressed in a letter regarding her sculpture.
