Mike Burgess, director general of ASIO, stated that social media significantly drives radicalisation, allowing extreme ideologies to be disseminated quickly and widely, transforming how quickly individuals can become radicalized.
Burgess described the internet as the world’s most potent incubator of extremism, emphasizing that it serves both to create unity amongst extremists and exacerbate divisions in society.
He pointed out that radicalisation can now occur in mere days or weeks, highlighting that the Christchurch attack exemplifies this alarming trend of lone actors fueled by online ideology.
Burgess observed that platforms like Telegram are crucial in this process, enabling nationalists and racists to connect with global extremists and strategize violent actions through dark corners of the internet.
