The Australian government has restricted foreign diplomats from bringing domestic workers into the country following reports of exploitative, slave-like working conditions, according to UN expert Prof Tomoya Obokata.
Concerns regarding the widespread exploitation of foreign domestic workers in diplomats' homes led to governmental actions aimed at restricting visas and intensifying awareness campaigns about their rights.
Recent court cases, including one where worker Seema Shergill was awarded $189,000 in unpaid wages, spotlighted serious issues within the treatment of domestic workers by diplomats.
Underlining systemic issues, Prof Obokata emphasized the importance of making the diplomatic community aware of the rights of domestic workers to prevent exploitation.
