The Graça Funicular, designed by Atelier Bugio, enhances urban mobility in Lisbon's hilly landscape. It seamlessly integrates into the existing transport system, referencing the city's iconic Bica Elevator. The lower station on Rua dos Lagares serves as an access point and equipment housing, while the funicular connects two significant stops, one near a viewpoint. The design includes a dynamic cabin structure that merges functionality with stunning views. Overall, the project strengthens the connection between Graça Hill and the lower city, contributing to Lisbon's rich transport heritage.
The design serves as a continuation of Lisbon's urban fabric, integrating seamlessly with the existing streets and providing essential connectivity across the steep terrain.
Atelier Bugio's Graça Funicular incorporates a double-height space at the lower station, establishing a direct relationship between the funicular and the city streets.
The funicular's opaque and transparent sections allow for operational functionality while providing scenic views of the new public garden and historical landmarks.
This project not only facilitates mobility but also enhances the urban landscape by linking Graça Hill with the lower city and offering views of the Tagus River.
