Tyler Jones, spokesperson for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, confirmed that 'there have been seven fatalities confirmed' due to the gangway collapse, as emergency rescue efforts take place.
At the time of the incident during the Gullah-Geechee Cultural Day, the gangway connected the ferry's outer dock to the land, leading to the plunging of people into the water.
Authorities stated they were unaware of the specific cause of the gangway's collapse but noted there were at least 20 people on it when it occurred.
