Anna Lucia is a self-taught artist whose work integrates computer algorithms with traditional textiles, creating a mixed-media form that explores the intersection of craft and computation. With a background in civil engineering, Anna applies a systematic approach, establishing rules and then allowing randomness to guide her creative process. Her art reflects a dialogue with the computer, using both digital and physical techniques to inform each other. Through the constraints of code and textiles, Anna finds a unique playground for experimentation, generating unpredictable yet beautiful outcomes.
I often jokingly say that I work at the intersection of craft and computation, working with both code and textiles as a medium.
I didn't purposely design any of my works; I didn't decide a blue rectangle should be in the corner, a pink in the middle, that is all decided by randomness.
Code is very flexible and fast, you can scale things and colours are endless. Working outside the screen puts constraints on what is possible.
a set of rules I can translate into code but then I add randomness to how those rules can be executed.
