Many New Yorkers awoke last Saturday morning to the smell of smoke after a fire broke out in Prospect Park on Friday evening. Following this, the New York National Weather Service declared NYC under a red flag warning for increased risk of brush fire. Shortly thereafter, New York issued a statewide Burn Ban.
Firefighters faced 'treacherous conditions' while battling the flames, with Commissioner Robert Tucker noting the situation has become 'extremely dangerous' due to challenging terrain, elevation, and limited water resources. A significant effort went into utilizing 150 feet of hose lines across a hill, pulling water from the Harlem River.
Commissioner Tucker expressed gratitude for the assistance from the Parks department and Emergency Management, highlighting the unusual number of fires in NYC parks over the past few weeks. The record-breaking instances of brush fires prompted the Burn Ban to remain effective until November 30.
New Yorkers are advised to keep their windows closed and steer clear of impacted areas during incidents of brush fires, as safety measures are crucial when faced with such environmental dangers.
