The Indigenous Peoples Thanksgiving Sunrise Gathering is a powerful tradition that highlights communal resilience and reflects on the brutal history faced by Indigenous Peoples, especially in regard to the genocide they suffered.
This year marks the 43rd annual event, organized by the International Indian Treaty Council to not only commemorate the Native occupation of Alcatraz but to honor the native Ramaytush Ohlone people as custodians of the land.
The gathering at Alcatraz is open to everyone, creating an opportunity for awareness and reflection. Despite limited boat tickets, the event will be accessible via live stream, reminding us of the importance of these narratives in public discourse.
As Andrea Carmen stated, it’s vital for all attendees to remember the history of Indigenous Peoples suffering and to give thanks as a community during this untraditional Thanksgiving celebration.
