In an all-hands meeting for Amazon Web Services (AWS) unit, CEO Matt Garman bluntly told colleagues that if they didn't like the controversial policy, they should leave. This direct approach underscores Amazon's commitment to establishing a strict return-to-office policy, as demonstrated by Garman's comments regarding employees' fit within the company culture. He emphasized that those uncomfortable with frequent in-office work might find better opportunities elsewhere, reinforcing the company's stance on in-person collaboration.
Garman stated, 'When we want to really, really innovate on interesting products, I have not seen an ability for us to do that when we're not in-person.' This highlights Amazon's belief that in-person work fosters a more conducive environment for innovation and collaboration, suggesting that the company views remote work as a potential hindrance to its goal of staying at the forefront of the technology industry.
The decision to insist on five days a week in the office by January 2025 comes after a gradual escalation from a previous three days a week mandate. Garman pointed out that the mixed in-office attendance during the initial period weakened team collaboration, stating, 'we didn't really accomplish anything, like we didn't get to work together and learn from each other.' This reflects Amazon's view that consistent daily teamwork is essential for their operations.
