AG Rob Bonta says price gougers will be 'held accountable' during Los Angeles wildfire emergency
Briefly

California law prohibits increasing rent or prices more than 10% after an emergency is declared. For sellers new to the emergency, prices cannot exceed 150% of cost.
"These predators are looking at the disaster with dollar signs in their eyes, instead of kindness in their hearts. That is unconscionable, despicable, and unacceptable, and most importantly, it is illegal," said Attorney General Rob Bonta.
Violators of price gouging laws can face criminal prosecution resulting in one year in jail and/or a fine of up to $10,000, and civil penalties up to $2,500 per violation.
Bonta emphasized that consequences are inevitable for those who exploit victims during emergencies: "You can't exploit victims and break the law for the sake of turning a profit and get away with it."
