Photographer Adam Friedlander's recent series, 'As the Crow Flies,' captures the Scottish Highlands through an unplanned lens, utilizing motion blur to convey a feeling of experience. Tracing his journey through beautiful, sometimes isolating landscapes, Friedlander expresses how emotion can entwine with the natural surroundings, reflecting an intimate relationship with the environment. His images, devoid of strict observation, embrace the dynamic beauty and existential significance of the Highlands, where each turn reveals new vistas that provoke feelings of adventure and tranquility.
With such a vast and layered subject, landscapes provide the photographer with the freedom to project their own emotions and point of view onto the image.
Because of the motion blur, the images feel experiential rather than observational; it is more reminiscent of how we remember a scene.
I found myself so excited with each turn we took, with each new row of hills and mountains in the distance.
I wanted this series to focus on atmosphere and form, which I enhance through motion blur and tonal contrast.
