Belgium's food agency warned against the consumption of Christmas trees, citing potential pesticides and flame retardants that make it unsafe for people and animals.
In a statement, Belgium's food agency emphasized: 'There is no way to ensure that eating Christmas trees is safe either for people or animals.'
After receiving the warning from AFSCA, the city of Ghent changed its promotional post's headline from 'Eat your Christmas tree' to 'Scandinavians eat their Christmas trees' to clarify the context.
The agency highlighted the lack of consumer knowledge on tree treatments, stating: 'not knowing that could have serious, even fatal consequences.'
