A dramatic near miss occurred on a runway at Long Beach Airport when a Southwest Airlines jet, cleared to land, nearly collided with a Diamond DA40 aircraft that was already on the runway.
The National Transportation Safety Board's preliminary report revealed that the Southwest flight was cleared to land on runway 30, which was occupied by a light aircraft that had just landed.
Despite the hazardous situation, both aircraft managed to avoid a collision. The Southwest jet slowed down while the two planes were approximately 857 feet apart, allowing them to safely taxi to their respective parking areas.
