The reality is that much of this clothing ends up in the landfill regardless. For instance, about a quarter of the donated clothes to organizations like Goodwill are resold successfully. The remainder is either sold in bulk, given to salvage buyers, or exported overseas. The clothing that goes abroad often ends up discarded as well, either being deemed unusable or burned. This process highlights the challenges we face in recycling, especially with garments made of mixed materials.
When considering how to reduce clothing waste, the prevailing advice is to buy fewer items initially. However, embracing a buy-less philosophy can feel quite challenging. I’ve found that despite my best intentions, I will always generate some level of clothing waste. It’s almost inevitable due to reasons like growth, wear and tear, or changing styles and preferences. Facing this reality pushes us to think critically about our consumption habits.
