At the height of the pandemic, we made the bold decision to move from D.C. to Seattle. My role at Marriott's headquarters transitioned to being fully remote, so it felt like the perfect moment to take a leap of faith. The opportunity presented itself at the right time, aligning with Geoff's acceptance into a prestigious program and my changing work situation.
Our cross-country, entirely virtual apartment hunt was quite the experience. Relying heavily on Google Earth and neighborhood reviews on Reddit, we explored various Seattle communities, settling eventually on a unit with a decent layout. While we weren't in love with it initially, we figured we could always move after a year if needed.
The first time we saw our new unit, it was stacked floor to ceiling with miniature toiletries, having served as hotel storage. Despite the clutter, we saw its potential—large windows, an efficient use of space, and being a corner unit were big draws. Like most high-rises, it lacked charm, but we knew we could add our own.
