Elon Musk recently suggested that The Boring Company could build the Transatlantic Tunnel for significantly less than the estimated $19.8 trillion budget, claiming, "The @boringcompany could do it for 1000X less money." This bold statement has rekindled interest in the feasibility of the project, even as experts point to the immense challenges involved.
Advancements in vacuum tube technology could make the Transatlantic Tunnel a reality, with trains reaching speeds over 3,000 mph. Reports suggest, "By creating a vacuum within the tunnel and using pressurized vehicles, trains traveling along the structure could theoretically reach speeds of more than 3,000 mph, making the journey between London and New York barely an hour long."
While the concept sounds thrilling, the reality is daunting. Comparing to existing infrastructure, it would take over 780 years to build at the speed achieved for the Channel Tunnel: "if the proposed Transatlantic Tunnel were to be built at the same speed of the Channel Tunnel, it would take 782 years to complete."
