In his first speech to the G20, President Lula da Silva made it clear the fight against hunger and poverty would be top of the agenda. Within weeks, Brazilian diplomats had outlined plans to create a Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty (Global Alliance) to resuscitate the SDGs. This proactive stance represents a critical pivot in addressing issues that have previously stagnated due to bureaucratic inertia, showcasing the potential for meaningful change in international development efforts.
The year 2024 will not be remembered as a good year for international development, marked by slowed progress toward poverty and hunger eradication, an ecological disaster at the Baku climate summit, strained aid budgets, and a tumultuous new debt crisis in Africa. With my country first populist nationalism on the rise and Donald Trump posing a renewed threat to multilateral institutions, the challenges facing the world seem more daunting than ever.
