In January 2025, Berkeley faced two notable shooting incidents shortly apart, raising concerns about public safety. The first occurred on January 18 in the Elmwood neighborhood, followed by a second shooting on January 20 in South Berkeley. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries from these incidents, contrasting with previous years when shootings often left victims. In 2024, the city recorded 30 shooting incidents, resulting in three fatalities and several injuries, highlighting a persistent challenge for law enforcement regarding gun violence.
City police have previously told Berkeleyside that they consider a gunfire call confirmed if officers find evidence such as bullet casings, a gunshot victim or victims or property damaged by gunfire at the scene.
In the 2025 Berkeley gunfire map, as with previous years, incidents with no known injuries are marked in yellow. If incidents with injuries do occur they will be marked in orange.
