The fire broke out inside a unit in a six-story building on the Upper East Side, quickly spreading to neighboring apartments and escalating to a three-alarm blaze.
Approximately 138 fire and EMS personnel fought the flames, employing drones for surveillance while one person tragically lost their life and seven others were injured.
Firefighters had to tear down entire walls to ventilate the roof, and were still conducting searches through debris late into the night.
Residents were left terrified and disoriented, with one witness describing her experience: 'We heard yelling like, 'Get out, get out!' so we opened the door.'
