Is Mindfulness a Supportive Path for You to Pursue?
"Disclaimer: I am biased about mindfulness. Yes, entering a monastery and learning mindfulness from a well-known Burmese teacher changed the direction of my life in a positive way. It changed my career course and provided me with greater balance and purpose. But that's not to say mindfulness is right for everyone. Is mindfulness right for you? That's what I hope to explore in this post. What are the upsides and downsides to devoting yourself to mindfulness this coming year?"
"A lot of what we call "mindfulness" is watered down. For example, some might say that simply noticing what's around you right now is one way of being present. That's nice, but it is not a mindfulness practice."
Authentic mindfulness is an active practice that trains attention rather than a passive noticing of surroundings. Superficial techniques like simple awareness or breathing for stress reduction offer benefits but do not constitute full mindfulness training. True mindfulness requires releasing strong attachment to personal identity and fixed points of view. Mindfulness can foster balance, peace, and personal growth for those willing to commit time and effort. Mindfulness is not universally suitable; certain persons may find it unviable or experience downsides. Evaluating personal readiness, potential benefits, and possible drawbacks is essential before committing to deep practice.
