Nick Gonzales fractures ankle during home run trot in brutal Pirates injury blow
Briefly

Nick Gonzales of the Pittsburgh Pirates experienced a bizarre injury after hitting a home run against the Marlins, suffering a nondisplaced left ankle fracture before completing his trot around the bases. Observations from the game led to a swift decision to lift him for a replacement. Gonzales, who had previously shown solid performance in the last season, is now on the 10-day injured list as the team replaces him with Emmanuel Valdez, emphasizing his versatility and hitting ability.
It was clear something was wrong with Nick Gonzales as he rounded first base after homering for the Pirates in what became one of the weirdest injuries of the early season.
Gonzales, who you could see pull up with a little skip before reaching first base, proceeded to limp around the bases and was lifted from the game for Adam Frazier.
Just watching him run around the bases, just didn't like what we saw, said Pirates manager Derek Shelton after the game.
Versatility, left-handed ability to hit, Shelton said of Valdez. We knew he could hit when we acquired him.
