The Miami City Commission unanimously opted for a special election on June 3 to fill the District 4 vacancy caused by Commissioner Manolo Reyes' recent death. Commissioner Miguel Angel Gabela emphasized the need for a fair election, stating he preferred to avoid any conflicts of interest or accusations of favoritism if an appointment was made. The winner will serve until 2027, and the special election is expected to cost around $380,000. Early voting is scheduled from May 30 to June 1, with candidate qualifying from April 21 to April 25.
"At the end of the day, I think let the best man or woman win," Commissioner Miguel Angel Gabela said. He added that he didn't want any "finger pointing" if the commission were to appoint someone.
The election will take place on Tuesday, June 3. Early voting is tentatively scheduled to run from Friday, May 30, to Sunday, June 1.
