Courtney Clenney's murder trial saw a significant development as lead prosecutor Khalil Quinan withdrew after a judge ruled he could be deposed over texts covered by attorney-client privilege. Quinan expressed hope that his departure would help address the defense’s motions and focus on achieving justice for the victim, Christian Obumseli. He had initially considered leaving for paternity leave but chose to stay amid ongoing conflicts with the defense. Quinan will be replaced by Shawn Abuhoff, who has prior experience with the case.
In a single-page memo, Assistant State Attorney Khalil Quinan expressed his resignation was necessary to prevent becoming a witness due to deposed material on attorney-client privilege.
Quinan noted, 'It is my hope that my withdrawal will facilitate the resolution of the Defendant's meritless motions, correct the record, and allow these proceedings to refocus on what truly matters: justice for Christian Obumseli.'
Quinan stated that he initially intended to withdraw for paternity leave but remained due to 'constant attacks' from the defense counsel.
The Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Laura Shearon Cruz ruled the state violated attorney-client privilege when they collected communications involving Clenney's parents and their attorneys.
