Hialeah has become the second city in Miami-Dade County to partner with the Trump administration, allowing local police to act as federal immigration agents. The city council's unanimous approval of the 287(g) agreement enables Hialeah police to detain individuals suspected of immigration violations, a move viewed by some as a response to strains from new immigrant arrivals. Mayor Esteban Bovo expressed concern navigating the balance between legal and illegal immigration, while Police Chief George Fuentes reassured residents that the police would not target them under this new policy.
Bovo emphasized that the decision represents a "fine line in a city like this one that has been built by legal immigrants, a very fine line as opposed to illegal immigrants.... The person that comes into the country illegally, illegally has already violated our laws, the laws of this country."
Police Chief George Fuentes assured that "The agreement does not weaponize our Hialeah Police officers against our city of Hialeah residents," addressing concerns over the impact of the partnership.
