Fugitive Bolsonaro ally, convicted in 2022 coup attempt, is detained by ICE
"The detainee is considered a fugitive from Brazilian justice after convictions to crimes including participation in an armed criminal organization, a coup d'état, and the attempted violent abolition of the rule of law."
"Ramagem fled Brazil in September, slipping across the northern border by car into Guyana and boarding a flight to the United States."
"Brazil's Chamber of Deputies removed him from office and canceled the passport after his conviction loomed."
"His arrest Monday wasn't directly tied to his Brazilian conviction, but was made possible through international police cooperation."
Alexandre Ramagem, a former Brazilian intelligence chief and congressman, was arrested in Florida for alleged immigration violations. He was convicted in absentia by Brazil's Supreme Court for attempting to overturn the 2022 election results and sentenced to 16 years in prison. After fleeing Brazil in September, he entered the U.S. on a diplomatic passport. Brazilian authorities submitted an extradition request and sought an Interpol notice for his arrest. His capture was facilitated by international police cooperation, although it was not directly linked to his Brazilian conviction.
