On International Domestic Workers' Day, a rally in Miami-Dade featured domestic workers and community leaders pushing for fair treatment and labor protections for thousands of workers. Organized by WeCount! and The Women's Fund Miami-Dade, the event underscored the essential role domestic workers play in the community while addressing significant challenges such as low wages, discrimination, and sexual harassment. Due to the private employment structure, many domestic workers lack legal protections typically afforded to other workers, raising concern about their vulnerability in the workplace.
"Without their important, critical labor, our society would cease to function," said Esteban Wood, policy director at WeCount!. Wood said there needs to be more recognition of the importance of the labor domestic workers perform and the vulnerabilities they face in the workplace.
Domestic workers are excluded from federal laws which prohibit workplace discrimination and harassment since most workers are employed by families privately. For an employee to file claims for discrimination or harassment, an employer must have 15 or more employees.
