With the hurricane season approaching, concerns are growing that immigration fears may prevent foreign-born residents in Florida from accessing shelters during disasters. Disaster relief groups, such as Third Wave Volunteers, expressed worries during a Miami Foundation gathering about the potential presence of ICE in these facilities. Miami-Dade County officials reassured attendees that shelters prioritize safety without checking immigration status, stating that law enforcement's role is purely to manage weapons and drugs. The American Red Cross echoed this commitment, affirming that all shelters remain open and welcoming to individuals regardless of background.
"We are very worried about ICE," she said. "Because immigrants are scared to go to shelters as is."
"The shelters are always open for anybody. Doesn't matter who you are or where you're from. Doesn't matter, you're welcome."
"Red Cross shelters are open to everyone. They are safe and welcoming spaces for people of all backgrounds."
