Author Torrey Peters Always Spatchcocks Her Chicken
Briefly

Torrey Peters, author of 'Detransition, Baby,' has been living between Colombia and New York City for the last four years. While enjoying Colombia's tropical fruits, she longs for New York's specific Asian cuisines. As she prepares to promote her new work 'Stag Dance,' which weaves through diverse settings including post-pandemic America, Peters embraces her current life in Santa Marta, appreciating local delicacies and the vibrant community, illustrated by daily encounters such as a local man caring for a stray dog.
"I'm used to New York, where I can go get Xi'an noodles or stuff that's very specific, like umami flavors," she says.
"They're so small, and there's so much work to get out what is basically a spoonful of incredibly good, sweet mango," she says.
"Don Francisco cups Negro's face in both hands and delivers to him a forceful lecture on the evils of chasing motorcycles," the writer observes.
"For now, though, Peters is content in Santa Marta, devouring lots of tropical fruit, oceanside seafood, and the best vending-machine candy bar for miles."
