Cleveland Browns co-owner Jimmy Haslam publicly acknowledged the failure of the team's trade for quarterback Deshaun Watson, calling it a "big swing and miss." Acquired in March 2022 from the Houston Texans for three first-round picks and a guaranteed $230 million contract, Watson has struggled with injuries and has faced disciplinary issues due to alleged misconduct. As a result, he has only started 19 games with low performance metrics. Despite the admission of mishap, the Browns owe Watson considerable money in the upcoming seasons.
We took a big swing and miss with Deshaun. We thought we had the quarterback; we didn't. And we gave up a lot of draft picks to get him, so we've got to dig ourselves out of that hole.
Watson's legal troubles have helped to derail his career in Cleveland. He served an 11-game suspension in 2022 after more than two dozen women accused him of sexual assault and inappropriate conduct.
It's an entire organization decision and it ends with Dee [Haslam] and I, so hold us accountable.
Cleveland still owes Watson $46 million in each of the next two seasons.
