During a visit to Miami, Donald Trump is reported to be scouting locations for his presidential library, with Florida International University (FIU) emerging as a potential site. Although FIU is in close proximity to Trump's golf resort, it faces stiff competition from Florida Atlantic University, which is nearer to Trump's Palm Beach home. Current discussions about FIU's candidacy seem informal, with no official confirmation from the university. The local interest in locating the library at FIU suggests there could be real estate and tourism benefits tied to this potential project.
Felix Lasarte, a Miami real estate lawyer and lobbyist who represents the Trump Organization, confirmed that he toured FIU earlier this month as part of a scouting effort for a future library.
Marc Sarnoff, a former Miami city commissioner who sits on the FIU board, said the same. But Sarnoff, a Democrat, said the idea sounded promising.
For now, according to the sources, FIU appears to be an underdog to Florida Atlantic University, a state school in Boca Raton that's about 25 miles away from Trump's palatial Palm Beach home.
It's not clear if FIU itself is involved in the push. A spokesperson for the school said she was not aware of any talks about FIU being considered for a presidential library.
