Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers-and Why We Do
"Strictly speaking, stress doesn't cause ulcers. A bacterium does. Robert Sapolsky, author of the highly influential book Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers, has been clear about that. But his famous phrase was never really about ulcers. It was about something more fundamental: why the human stress response is so easily, and so chronically, activated-long after any real danger has passed, and even in the absence of any danger at all."

The human stress response evolved to protect against acute, life-threatening danger. Humans frequently activate that response for anticipated or psychological threats such as social slights, relationship conflict, humiliation, or everyday inconveniences like traffic. Chronic activation of the stress response persists long after real danger has passed and can be continuous even without present threats. Prolonged stress weakens immune function, increases vulnerability to illness and premature death, raises risk of substance abuse and chronic insomnia, and impairs daily functioning. Chronic stress is associated with neuronal death in the hippocampus, impairing memory. Reducing stress requires changing responses to stressors and altering or leaving stressful environments.
