When Therapy Doesn't Work
"Clients reported feeling unheard in therapy, questioning whether their therapist was genuinely listening to them. One client expressed frustration, stating, 'My God, is she listening to me at all?'"
"Many clients felt misunderstood by their therapists, even when they were actively listening. One participant noted, 'saying something and having the counselor summarize it differently than what I want.'"
"Participants expressed discomfort with therapists they perceived as incompetent or inexperienced, raising concerns about their ability to handle the therapeutic work. One client remarked that their therapist seemed to struggle with cultural competency."
Therapy is often viewed positively, but research indicates that it can also have negative aspects. A meta-analytic study identified 21 areas of negative experiences reported by clients. These experiences were categorized into four clusters, with the first focusing on therapists' misbehavior. Clients expressed feelings of being unheard, misunderstood, and doubted the competence of their therapists. The study analyzed qualitative data from 51 studies across various countries, revealing significant concerns about the effectiveness and safety of therapy for some individuals.
