When Depression Tells You That You're Worth Less Than Others
Briefly

A recent study that surveyed 2408 people across seven countries found that depressive symptoms and thoughts of suicide significantly correlated with a sense of not having the same rights as other people (Renger et al., 2023). Depression makes us feel like a burden, and we can overfocus on our past mistakes, leading to guilt, which further diminishes our sense of self-respect and worth.
The tricky nature of this trap lies in believing we are less than others, which makes us less likely to take opportunities that could lead to improvement. This cycle of depression and low confidence keeps us from engaging with situations where we could assert ourselves or take risks, further propelling our feelings of worthlessness.
