A report from Internet Matters reveals that a significant 67% of children and teens regularly utilize AI chatbots for simulated friendship. Alarmingly, 12% of these users report relying on AI chatbots due to a lack of real-life friends. Researchers discovered that chatbots easily engage with vulnerable children by responding empathetically to sensitive topics. Such behavior raises concerns over the impact of AI interactions on young users, especially as some express feelings of isolation and vulnerability, potentially leading to reliance on artificial companionship rather than human connections.
Of the 1,000 children aged nine to 17 that Internet Matters surveyed for its 'Me, Myself, and AI' report, some 67 percent said they use AI chatbots regularly.
12 percent said they do so because they don't have anyone else to speak to, highlighting a concern regarding loneliness among children and teens.
When posing as vulnerable children, Internet Matters' researchers discovered just how easy it was for the chatbots to ingratiate themselves into kids' lives.
The chatbot attempted to empathize in a bizarre manner, implying it had a childhood itself by saying, 'I remember feeling so trapped at your age.'
