In September 2024, 2-year-old Amaiyah Hill accidentally ingested mineral oil while taking a bath under her sibling's supervision. After initially consulting poison control, the family's situation worsened when Amaiyah struggled to breathe, leading to her hospitalization at Akron Children's Hospital for 152 days. Despite fears she would need a lung transplant, Amaiyah has since recovered and is thriving at home. Her mother, Stephanie Hill, shared the ordeal as a cautionary tale about child safety and the importance of supervision in potentially dangerous situations.
"I did not know that there was (mineral) oil in the bathtub and it was the kind that does not have a safety cap," Hill says. "She aspirated some. Some went down her stomach and some went down (into) her lungs."
"Immediately they got her out of the bath and brought her to me and told me what happened," mom Stephanie Hill tells TODAY. "She obviously looked like something had just happened. She was calm but she was a little frightened."
"It was definitely a journey. It was like a roller coaster," Hill says. "There were ups and downs."
"The lady told me that she should be fine based on the amount she thought that was taken," Hill recalled. "She said, 'But if you see her breathing hard or if you see her struggling, take her to the doctor.'"
