To Improve Body Image, "Enough is Enough" May Be Essential
"'I will never sacrifice my well-being again. I will never give up my power again.' The above quote is from one of my participants, Nixen, who overcome negative body image and developed a predominantly positive body image over time. Her quote illustrates a powerful 'turning point' that characterizes women's transitions towards positive body image: The experience of 'Enough is Enough.'"
"Until now, intervention techniques have mainly focused on how to reduce negative body image. Yet, our research shows that the factors that help people overcome negative body image may be different from the factors that caused it. Further, interventions have focused on reducing negative body image but not on whether people feel determined to change. This means that even our best interventions could fail, or be less effective than they could be."
Enough is Enough denotes a visceral, resolute turning point in which individuals feel fed up with negative body image and determined to change. Enough is Enough involves more than a cognitive decision; it is a sustained, deeply felt conviction to maintain change over time. Existing interventions have primarily targeted reduction of negative body image rather than fostering the determination to change, which may limit effectiveness. A brief questionnaire measures Enough is Enough, and a targeted intervention can increase Enough is Enough among women with negative body image. Increasing Enough is Enough can expand the number of people who begin a transition toward positive body image.
