'The Artist's Way' Week 12: Is Julia Cameron Wrong? | Defector
Briefly

Completing 12 weeks of The Artist's Way led to significant changes in personal and professional lives for participants. One participant noted that the structure helped them combat winter depression effectively for the first time in years. Active journaling through morning pages provided clarity on emotions and desires during the process. However, there were criticisms of Julia Cameron's privileged tone which seemed to oversimplify the challenges faced by individuals, suggesting that a mindset shift solves all problems while disregarding broader societal implications.
I think there's something to locking into a structured program and just focusing on getting to the end that helped me, at least, keep from getting mired in the never-ending gray that is January-March.
The morning pages meant that I was actively processing every twist and turn that came, and that processing helped me understand how I felt and what I wanted out of different situations.
I think throughout the process, I found myself balancing multiple truths: Sometimes it does take a radical and abrupt mindset shift to see changes in your life.
The tone Julia Cameron had throughout the book was very bootstrappy and, dare I say, privileged in the way she was like, 'Simply make a movie and make a ton of money!'
This was the least depressed winter I've had in recent memory. I think there's something to locking into a structured program.
