Dublin Airport has experienced 11 consecutive days without any recorded sunshine, equalling its longest streak since data collection began in 1942. According to weather experts, this gloomy period results from high pressure in the east and clouds moving in from the Irish Sea. While this pattern primarily affects eastern areas, some western regions enjoy brighter spells. The record for no sunshine across Ireland is 16 days, last seen at Belmullet in 1956 and Cork Airport in 2018. Despite the dreary forecast, some relief with brief sunny intervals is anticipated soon, along with mild temperatures.
Alan O'Reilly, from Carlow Weather, noted the significant inclement weather pattern: "This equals the longest-running sunless streak since records began in 1942."
"The longest recorded stretch of consecutive days with no sunshine nationally is 16 days, which occurred at Belmullet in September 1956 and Cork Airport in late 2018," according to a Mét Eireann spokesperson.
