Student athlete suicide rates have doubled since 2002

During the period from July 1, 2002, to June 30, 2022, the share of deaths by suicide among NCAA varsity athletes rose from 7.5 percent to more than 15 percent, making it the second most common cause of death after accidents.
The study highlighted that the pressures of school, internal and external performance expectations, time demands, injury, athletic identity, and physical fatigue can contribute to depression, mental health issues, and ultimately suicide among athletes.
