Recent research indicates a significant rise in emergency room visits and hospitalizations related to cannabis use among older adults, increasing nearly 27-fold since the early 2000s. Alarmingly, seniors admitted for cannabis-related issues face a 72% increased risk of developing dementia. As cannabis becomes legalized across the U.S., its use among middle-aged and older adults has surged, with 21% of those 50 and older reporting recent use. While cannabis is often utilized for various health benefits, concerns arise regarding its long-term impact on cognitive health, particularly memory and the brain structure changes associated with dementia.
"Long-term and heavy cannabis use has been associated with memory problems in midlife along with changes in brain structure associated with dementia," said Dr. Daniel Myran.
"We set out to estimate the risk of being diagnosed with dementia in a group of people whose cannabis use resulted in a visit to the emergency room or required hospitalization for treatment." said Dr. Myran.
